Preparation
- Preheat your oven according to the tater tot bag instructions.
- In a large, oven-proof skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Season with salt and pepper, drain, and set aside.
- Reduce heat to medium, melt butter in the skillet, add mushrooms and shallots, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for 3-5 minutes until mushrooms soften.
- Add garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
- Sprinkle flour into the skillet and whisk to combine, cooking for 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in chicken broth and milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
- Add tamari/soy sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika. Increase heat to bring to a bubble, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes until thinned slightly.
- Remove the skillet from heat and stir in ground beef.
- Arrange tater tots on top of the mixture. Place the skillet on a baking sheet and bake according to tater tot bag instructions.
- Allow the casserole to sit for 5 minutes to thicken before serving.
Notes
Serve hot from the oven, paired with a green salad or steamed veggies. Offer extra ketchup or your favorite hot sauce for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
