Ingredients

Meat and Seasonings
  • 1 lb ground beef or a plant-based alternative for a vegetarian version.
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
Vegetables and Flavorings
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms can substitute with bell peppers.
  • 1 shallot, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce Ingredients
  • 3 tbsp gluten-free or all-purpose flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 1.5 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 1 cup milk (skim)
  • 2 tbsp gluten-free tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
Topping
  • 2 lb bag tater tots frozen works perfectly.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven according to the tater tot bag instructions.
  2. In a large, oven-proof skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Season with salt and pepper, drain, and set aside.
  3. Reduce heat to medium, melt butter in the skillet, add mushrooms and shallots, season with salt and pepper, and sauté for 3-5 minutes until mushrooms soften.
  4. Add garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
  5. Sprinkle flour into the skillet and whisk to combine, cooking for 1 minute.
  6. Gradually pour in chicken broth and milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
  7. Add tamari/soy sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika. Increase heat to bring to a bubble, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes until thinned slightly.
  8. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in ground beef.
  9. Arrange tater tots on top of the mixture. Place the skillet on a baking sheet and bake according to tater tot bag instructions.
  10. Allow the casserole to sit for 5 minutes to thicken before serving.

Notes

Serve hot from the oven, paired with a green salad or steamed veggies. Offer extra ketchup or your favorite hot sauce for added flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
