  • 4 large large potatoes, thinly sliced Starchy potatoes like Russets are ideal.
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream For a richer flavor, you can use a mix of heavy cream and milk.
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice) You can use Gruyère, mozzarella, or pepper jack.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Paprika (optional, for garnish)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potato slices followed by half of the onion slices.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the cream and butter until melted. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potato and onion layers.
  5. Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes and onions, then pour the rest of the cream mixture on top.
  6. Sprinkle cheese over the top layer.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Scalloped potatoes are best served warm and can be presented directly from the baking dish. They pair well with roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or fresh salads. For a twist, consider adding garlic or herbs like thyme, and customize with vegetables like spinach or broccoli.
